Leash

Safety

We want your experience to be perfect…and safe, so please take a few minutes to read this page in it’s entirety. It’s important.

  • Retractable leashes should be used by responsible adults who have control over their dog. Small children should not be allowed to use retractable leashes. Children should also be taught that retractable leashes are not toys, and should never be allowed to play with them.
  • Always hold your STURDY DAWG Retractable Leash by the soft grip handle, never by the leash tape.  Never wrap the tape around your hand, fingers or any body part. Tape wrapping around any parts of your body can cause serious injuries.  Never grab the leash tape to control your dog.
  • Always check that all parts of the leash and your dog’s collar or harness, are in good condition. If either is showing signs of wear and tear in any way do not use. If your dog’s collar or the leash breaks, the tape and heavy clasp can backlash with enough force to cause serious injuries, particularly to the face, teeth and eyes.
  • Do not use this leash with dogs that lunge, bolt, or are unruly and poorly behaved around other dogs and people. Train your dog first, then progress to a retractable leash.
  • You’ll find retractable leashes less than enjoyable (as will your dog) if you allow them to run to the end of the leash at full speed. This will cause them to be jerked back, and puts undue stress on the leash. Retractable dog leashes are meant for walking.
  • Always be mindful of your surroundings, especially other people and dogs, and keep the tape away from them. Keep the tape retracted around others and if the tape does happen to touch them or wrap around them, advise them not to touch it. Grab your dog by the collar immediately and move them away from the person, then retract the leash.
  • Never let your dog get too far from you when walking near driveways and side streets. You never want your dog to get in the way of a car backing up or turning a corner because you couldn’t see it from your stance 16 feet back from your dog.
  • Never tie the leash around a tree, pole or any other object. It should never be used for use as a tie-out, even temporarily.
  • We advertise that the STURDY DAWG Retractable Leash support dogs ‘well over 100 pounds’. In reality, this model has been designed and tested for dogs up to 220 pounds. However, it is our belief that it’s best to not push the limits of any retractable leash. We personally would not use a retractable leash with a dog in the 200 lb. range.
